BIG QUESTIONS IN CREATIVITY 2013

Edited by Cynthia Burnett and Paul Reali

Creativity—multi-layered, multi-faceted, multi-variate—naturally raises many questions from those who seek to understand it. At the International Center for Studies in Creativity at SUNY Buffalo State, home of the world’s first Master’s of Science in Creativity, the field’s newest thinkers explore some of the newest questions. Big Questions in Creativity 2013 collects the year’s best papers from the M.S. program’s graduate students, and presents them here for anyone interested in taking a deep dive into current thinking in creativity.

"What is The Role of Creativity in Talent Development?," written by Lee Anne White, explores the basic theoretical conception of giftedness and how it is shifting from a notion of giftedness as a fixed trait with which one is born to that of talents developed over a life span through hard work and dedication. While giftedness and talent are identified as "potential" in children and young adults, it is based on such factors as eminence, domain-changing contributions, extraordinary achievement, and self-actualization in adults. As these changes have evolved and our understanding of intelligence has broadened, researchers have discovered that other key factors, primarily creativity and intrinsic motivation, are crucial for talent development.
