SANTA FE AND NORTHERN NEW MEXICO | Photographing the Cultural Landscape
DATES: April 15-21, 2018 WORKSHOP IS FULL. PLEASE SEND EMAIL TO BE ADDED TO WAITING LIST OR NEXT WORKSHOP.
LOCATION: Santa Fe, NM
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Tap your creative potential and explore your personal vision in Santa Fe—the country’s most unique city—and the surrounding high desert of New Mexico. Experience the richness of Native American, Hispanic and Anglo culture; explore the ruins of historic Puebloan communities that date back to 100-1600 AD; discover the magical light in slot canyons formed by wind and water; and delight in the colorful hillsides and adobe structures that drew Georgia O’Keeffe to the high country.
With Santa Fe as our base, you’ll have ample opportunity to roam the streets of America’s oldest capital city. Home to hundreds of art galleries, inspiration abounds.. We’ll visit several exceptional photography galleries, feast on southwestern cuisine, and photograph both iconic and lesser-known natural and historic sites. And for this particular workshop, you will also enjoy the comaraderie of other creative women who share a passion for photography and travel.
WHAT TO EXPECT. This is a field workshop, so we’ll spend most of our time out shooting. Each day, we will gather for image reviews and discussions. You'll have an opportunity to share current work and personal photographic goals on Monday. Throughout the week, you'll get feedback on the images you are shooting on our field trips. These will be long, yet rewarding days in which you’ll capture many unique images, learn to look at things in new ways and explore your visual style. We will also relax and have some fun! We’ll start the week with a casual Sunday afternoon gathering and end the week with a group dinner celebration. Throughout the week, you can dine on your own or with others in the group. Daily meals are not provided, but kitchens are included in the casitas where we will stay, so you can keep a few things on hand and explore Santa Fe’s many wonderful restaurants.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND. This is a workshop for women photographers—whether avid amateurs, emerging artists or professional photographers who want to refine their vision, expand their portfolio and inject some freshness into their way of seeing. You should be familiar with your camera’s operation and have a basic understanding of exposure metering and image processing. (Men are welcome to attend most of my other workshops.)
COST AND REGISTRATION. Tuition: $1275 includes instruction, welcome gathering and celebration dinner. Lodging and other meals are not included. A $400 deposit, which includes a non-refundable $100 registration fee, is required to reserve your space. The remaining balance will be invoiced and is due at least 45 days prior to the workshop. Enrollment is limited to 8 participants. (A minimum of 5 participants is required.) Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. You may register online or email Lee Anne directly and mail a check. When we receive your registration and payment, we’ll send either an acceptance email indicating that you’re enrolled in the workshop or notification that you’re on the waiting list.
WHAT TO BRING. Bring your digital camera, your favorite lenses (wide-angle to telephoto suggested), a sturdy tripod, cable or remote shutter release, and a laptop for downloading and working with images. You’ll need image-editing software (such as Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or Lightroom) to process your images and a memory stick to load them onto a classroom computer for sharing. A polarizing filter is recommended.
ENROLLMENT IS LIMITED TO 8 PARTICIPANTS. We want to make sure each student gets plenty of time for one-on-one instruction and image feedback. Reserve your space now.
ACCOMMODATIONS. Our workshop will be based at Campanilla Compound, a cluster of unique adobe casitas situated on a quiet hillside just four blocks from the historic Santa Fe Plaza. Choose from 1BR/1BA, 2BR/2BA or 2BR/3BA casitas. Each has a full kitchen, living room, dining area, wood-burning kiva fireplace, wireless internet, washer and dryer, and free off-street parking. The dining tables provide a workspace for editing images or writing in your journal.
You are responsible for booking your own casita. 1BR/1BA casitas are $187/night plus a one-time $100 cleaning fee. 2BR/2BA and 2BR/3BA casitas are $250/night plus a $139 cleaning fee. (Lodgers taxes and state taxes are not included in this amount.) Bedrooms may have one or two beds; maximum occupancy is 2 people for a 1BR casita and 4 people for a 2BR casita, so sharing is both possible and encouraged to reduce lodging costs. Lee Anne can help you coordinate sharing. Some units are on one floor; others are two-story. Please discuss your specific needs with the property manager. Management will accept up to two credit cards per casita; a 50% deposit is required. Cancellations made up to 3o days prior to arrival are refundable, less a $100 deposit. Full payment is due 30 days prior to your visit. You may book additional days prior to or after your visit to extend your stay (subject to availability). Call 800-828=9700 to reserve your casita, and please let them know you are with Lee Anne White's photography workshop.
MEALS. Students are responsible for their own meals. Each condo has a full kitchen, so you may wish to keep breakfast foods and snacks on hand. Restaurants in every price range, coffee shops, excellent grocery stores and health-food markets are located within a quick walk or drive of Campanilla Compound. We will generally eat a meal together on excursions. Other meals are on your own or with others from the group. The Sunday gathering, along with a casual, Friday-night celebration dinner are included in the tuition price.
GETTING THERE. The Albuquerque International Sunport is located approximately one hour south of Santa Fe and there are several shuttle services that provide transportation. If you rent a car and drive from Albuquerque: Take 1-25 North to Santa Fe (approx. 1 hour). Use Exit 282A/282B for US-84 N/St. Francis Drive toward US-285 N/Santa Fe Plaza (approx. 1 minute). Merge onto US-285 N/US-84 W/St. Francis Drive and continue approx. 7 minutes. Turn right onto Paseo De Peralta, continuing for approx. 4 min. Turn left onto Otero Street. Campanilla Compound is on your left.
GETTING AROUND. We’ll cover many miles by car most days. You can drive your own car or carpool with other students. We encourage sharing and can help coordinate this prior to the workshop. If you share transportation, please be prepared to reimburse the driver for your share of the car rental and gas.
CANCELLATIONS, REFUNDS, TRIP INSURANCE. If for any reason you need to withdraw from the workshop, please notify us in writing within 45 days of the first workshop day. We will return your deposit less a $100 cancellation fee. If you cancel less than 45 days before the start of a workshop, your $400 deposit is non-refundable unless we are able to fill your space, in which case we will refund your deposit less the $100 cancellation fee. Cancellations made less than 7 days before the start of the workshop will not be refunded unless we are able to fill your space. We highly recommend that you purchase refundable airline tickets and consider purchasing trip cancellation insurance. We will not be responsible for refunds due to illness, personal emergency, unattended workshops, or events not under our control. In the event a workshop is cancelled for any reason, our liability is limited to the return of all fees paid to us. We will not be responsible for any loss on airline tickets, lodging or any other losses related to cancellation.
