the mutable sea

How does one photograph the sea—an entity so broad, flat and endless—in an intimate way? For me, the key was focusing on the way the sea made me feel: calm and soothed by the rhythmic ebb and flow of the tide. That meant slowing down—way down—both my observations and camera exposures. Each evening, I’d set out as the sun dipped below the horizon, after others had packed their beach towels and headed home for the day. What I discovered were vibrantly colored and constantly changing reflections in the water. Each day was different—the waves, the color of the sky and the shifting sand beneath my feet.
